Scope and Content Redrawn for publication from DC 32485. Plan showing the entresol floor of Torthorwald Castle, Dumfries and Galloway A motte-and-bailey castle was probably erected here by the de Tothorwald family in the 12th century, succeeded by a stone tower built in the late 13th century. The interior was extensively remodelled in the late 14th or early 15th century. During the remodelling of the tower's interior, this entresol floor (a level between the ground and first floors) was removed to accommodate a new barrel vault over the ground floor. To support the extra weight of the vault, the walls had to be thickened. In 1587 Torthorwald was acquired by the Douglases though marriage, who retained possession of the castle until around 1890. The tower was last occupied in the around 1630, though by the end of the 17th century it lay abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
