Scope and Content Redrawn for publication from DC 32461. Unattributed, [1996]. Detail of the burial chamber at Windy Edge long cairn, Dumfries and Galloway Situated within an upland forestry plantation clearing, this chambered cairn has been mutilated by stone robbing, obliterating much of the cairn's 'tail'. At the western end of the cairn has been a flat-fronted façade, faced with large upright slabs. The chamber, now ruined, is entered from the centre of the façade through a short passage built of flat stone slabs and drystone walling. Long cairns and long barrows form a group of early Neolithic monuments with a wide distribution throughout Britain. Excavations have shown complex timber or stone structures (mortuary structures) lie beneath these cairns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
