Scope and Content View of the tower at Torthorwald Castle, Dumfries and Galloway A motte-and-bailey castle was probably erected here by the de Tothorwald family in the 12th century, succeeded by a stone tower built in the late 13th century. During the late 14th or early 15th century Torthorwald was extensively rebuilt. In 1587 the lands of Torthorwald passed to the Douglases through marriage, and until around 1890 the castle remained in their possession. Last occupied around 1630, by the end of the 17th century it had been abandoned as a residence. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
