Scope and Content Enclosure at Over Rig, Dumfries and Galloway Erosion by the White Esk has destroyed a large portion of this earthwork which lies at the bottom of a natural amphitheatre. Excavations in 1900 and 1984 suggested Over Rig was a ceremonial monument. Built on a 'raft' of clay, logs and cobbles, two round structures were enclosed within a palisade possibly accessible from the river. Excavation work in 1984 by R J Mercer of Edinburgh University followed up earlier work by J Bell, a local antiquary. Radiocarbon dating of charcoal from two hearths suggests a date around 100AD for the site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
