Scope and Content View of east processional doorway of New Abbey Parish Church, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. This shows the eastern doorway to the nave of the abbey church. On either side are the heavy buttresses added in c.1620 to strengthen the walls. The nave is three-storeyed with windows of varying size and design at aisle, triforium and clerestory levels. The windows at aisle level are the most ornate with chevron decoration on the round-headed arches. The three-light triforium windows are triangular-headed, while the clerestory windows are the plainest with simple undecorated round-headed arches. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
