Scope and Content Detail of east doorway of New Abbey Parish Church, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. This is a detail of the east doorway in the south wall of the nave of the medieval abbey church. This was used by monks going to and from the cloister. This doorway was covered by a burial vault from c.1620 to 1905, and is therefore very well-preserved. This doorway contains some of the finest Romanesque carving in the abbey. It is surrounded by four arches, composed of circular shafts surmounted by foliage-carved capitals and round-headed arches carved with chevron decoration. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
