Scope and Content Fenton Heights, scooped settlement and earthworks, Dumfries and Galloway This unusual site lies on the east slope of Fenton Heights and comprises an earthwork enclosure and a smaller scooped settlement The unique feature of this site is that the enclosure has been built, not on the top of the hill but on steeply-rising ground, leaving little room for buildings. The only level ground is occupied by the later scooped settlement. Although the earthwork looks on plan like a typical settlement, its hillslope position raises the possibility that it may have served a different function. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
