Description St Columba's graveyard, Canna. Sculptured cross.

Date 1983

Catalogue Number D 94153 CS

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 378283

Scope and Content The sculptured cross at A'Chill, Canna, Highland The cross still stands in what is probably its original base, and almost certainly indicates the site of an Early Christian monastic foundation. This splendid free-standing cross stands at A'Chill, in the natural amphitheatre once occupied by the township of Keill. It has been richly decorated, but is now badly weathered. It shows the Adoration of the Magi and animal ornament. A survey of Canna and Sanday was undertaken by the Royal Commission to record all the archaeological sites and monuments and the landscape within which they lie. This landscape is published as RCAHMS Broadsheet 5. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
