Scope and Content North side of St Catherine's Street, Cupar, Fife St Catherine Street was developed by John Ferguson, banker and allegedly corrupt Provost, who probably hired Gillespie Graham to design the buildings. After Ferguson was bankrupted in 1817, and street was developed by architect-builder, Robert Hutchison. The Royal Hotel (right) was built in about 1835. To its left is St James Episcopal church which replaced a Georgian church in 1866. Next door is the Clydesdale bank, built in about 1830. The buildings up to the corner were constructed in 1816-25. Cupar's old tolbooth blocked access to land being developed by John Ferguson the Provost. He called a council-meeting, allegedly only inviting his friends who agreed to have the building demolished. His workmen carried out the demolition the same night. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
