Scope and Content Aerial view of Barony Colliery, Ayrshire Barony Colliery's Shafts 1 and 2 opened in 1910 under Bairds and Dalmellington Ltd. Shaft 3, planned in 1938, opened in 1945. Shaft 2 collapsed and Shaft 1 was filled in 1962. Production halted until 1965 when shaft 4 was sunk. The mine closed in 1989. From right to left, in the foreground are: the two original Winding-Engine Houses; the Old Power House; and the Old Water Treatment Plant with the Lancashire Boilers. Behind is Number 3 Shaft's headframe and the Coal Preparation Plant (centre right). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
