Scope and Content Grave-marker from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This grave-marker was originally recorded in Reilig Odhrain. It is decorated within a ringed-cross set within a square frame. The cross has splayed arms and sunken angles. It is now in the Abbey Museum (No 30). To the left of the cross's shaft is a paten, and to the right is a chalice with a central knot. The slab may have marked the grave of a priest.
