Scope and Content Settling Tanks, Coal Conveyor and Despatch Hopper from top of Number 2 Winding Tower, Seafield Colliery, Kirkcaldy, Fife Seafield Colliery was sunk by the National Coal Board in 1954-66. It was one of five new super-pits and, in its heyday in 1970, employed 2,466 people. It was closed in 1988. Dirty water from the mine workings is pumped into the Settling Tanks - the pools in the picture's upper left. The coal dust and shale settles to the bottom before the water is discharged. Pumps are used in most coal mines to keep the mine workings clear of water. In modern mines, most pumps and pump-houses are situated underground at the pit bottom. Earlier mines tended to have pump-houses on the surface. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
