Scope and Content 19th-century view of the Canongate Kirk, Canongate, Edinburgh The Canongate Kirk was built in 1688 by James Smith, at the instigation of James VII, from money left to the Crown by a rich merchant, Thomas Moodie. It is a place of worship for the Royal family when they are in residence at Holyrood Palace. The arms of Thomas Moodie appear above an inscribed tablet over the Doric portico. Above the circular window are the carved Royal Arms of William III. The emblem of the Canongate, a stag's head, cross and antlers appears on top of the gable. In 1128 David I was hunting when, cornered by a stag, he fell from his horse. Suddenly, he saw a golden cross appear between the stag's antlers. The stag fled, and in thanks for his life, he founded the Abbey of Holyrood on that spot. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
