Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Achnabreck, Argyll and Bute To the north of Achnabreck farmhouse can be found some of the most elaborate and extensive cup-and-ring carvings in Scotland. The carvings are in three groups, the largest group being spread across three separate sheets of exposed rock. At almost 1m in diameter, the cup-and-ring mark at the centre of this group of carvings is the largest so far recorded in Scotland. Nearby are other multi-ringed cup-and-ring markings, some with gutters running from the cupmarks. Broadly similar Neolithic rock-art appears in north-west Spain, Brittany and Ireland. The purpose of these carvings remains uncertain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
