Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Cairnbaan, Argyll and Bute Two sheets of rock at Cairnbaan are heavily decorated with cup-and-ring markings. There is a noticeable difference between the two sheets, the first being composed of mostly plain cupmarks and the second mostly of multi-ringed cupmarks. The carvings adorning the exposed rock-sheet consist for the most part of plain cups (at least 60), and a few cupmarks with single rings. A feature of this rock-sheet are the long gutters running from some of the cups at the left of this image. Broadly similar Neolithic rock-art appears in north-west Spain, Brittany and Ireland. The purpose of these carvings remains uncertain. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
