Scope and Content Central cist at Nether Largie North, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute Nether Largie North forms part of a striking 'linear cairn cemetery' of four cairns (Nether Largie South, Mid and North and Kilmartin Glebe). Its impressive form is due to reconstruction after J H Craw's 1930 excavations which wholly dismantled the site. The main burial cist, aligned north-south, lies immediately north of the centre of the cairn. Arranged around the edges of the capstone were 18 flat slabs, which Craw surmised to be for further protection. During the Bronze Age many older monuments were reused as burial sites, probably because these places were special or even holy to people. The Neolithic cairn at Nether Largie South received Bronze Age burials and is the focus of the linear cemetery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
