Scope and Content Elevation of east panelling (A) of first-floor private room, 1597 block of Culross Palace, Culross, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. The panelling of the first-floor private room of the 1597 block was installed during the reign of George II (1727-1760) when Culross' iron scone-girdle industry was in decline. Traces of earlier decoration have been found behind the woodwork. Culross' iron scone-girdle industry was damaged by the loss of its monopoly in 1727 and then killed off by competition from Carron Ironworks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
