Scope and Content Ground-floor plan of Culross Palace, Culross, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. The present ground-plan of the palace reflects George Bruce's additions to it as he grew rich. The ground-floor rooms housed the 'offices' of the house - the kitchen and scullery as well as stores and cellars. George Bruce of Culross (later of Carnock) who built Culross Palace, was a merchant, entrepreneur and industrialist who made his fortune developing the local coal and salt industry.
