Scope and Content North elevation of courtyard in front of earliest block of Culross Palace, Culross, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. This elevation shows the north face of the courtyard in front of the earliest block. To the right, in cross-section, is the early 17th-century Long Gallery, one of George Bruce's earliest additions. George Bruce of Culross (later of Carnock) who built Culross Palace, was a merchant, entrepreneur and industrialist who made his fortune developing the local coal and salt industry. He was knighted by James VI and died in 1625. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
