Scope and Content East elevation from main courtyard of Culross Palace, Culross, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. The palace began in 1597 with a simple merchant's house (centre, end-on). As George Bruce grew richer, he added the Long Gallery (left) and the strong room (to right of original house). The expansion ended in 1611 with the detached north block (right). George Bruce of Culross (later of Carnock) who built Culross Palace, was a merchant, entrepreneur and industrialist who made his fortune developing the local coal and salt industry. He was knighted by James VI and died in 1625. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
