Scope and Content Detail from north-east of statue of Highlander on top of Glenfinnan Monument, Inverness-shire The Glenfinnan Monument stands at the head of Loch Shiel at the spot where Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Prince Charles Edward Stewart or Bonnie Prince Charlie) met the clan chiefs and raised the Royal Standard on 19 August 1745, proclaiming he had come to claim the crown of Scotland. The monument was built in 1815 by Alexander MacDonald of Glenaladale to commemorate this event. It is a tall rubble-built battlemented column, surrounded by a coped eight-sided rubble wall. Three sections bear inscriptions in English, Gaelic and Latin. In 1834 Angus MacDonald removed some buildings from the base of the tower and added a statue of a Highlander by John Greenshields. Some say it is supposed to represent the Prince looking across the Loch for the approaching Cameron clan. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
