Scope and Content Long cairn at Slewcairn, Dumfries and Galloway Now within a forestry plantation, this long cairn occupies a natural shelf on the south-western slopes of Meikle Hard hill. This view from the north is taken from the forecourt in front of the cairn. The northern end of the cairn was concave-shaped, and had a façade of orthostats (large flattish slabs). The central mortuary passage was lined with dry-stone walling. Long cairns and long barrows form a group of early Neolithic monuments with a wide distribution throughout Britain. Excavations have shown complex timber or stone structures (mortuary structures) lie beneath these cairns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
