Scope and Content Old Bridge, Dumfries This is the oldest surviving multiple-arched stone bridge in Scotland. Records show it was being built in 1431. It was damaged by floods in 1620 and rebuilt. In the 19th century it was shortened from nine to six arches and was restricted to foot traffic. Built of the local red sandstone and slightly humpbacked, the bridge has six arches, one of which is pointed. The parapets have weep-holes to allow water to drain from the walkway. The central cutwaters form pedestrian refuges at road level. The bridge, known as the Dervorguilla bridge, took the name from its late 13th century and probably timber-built predecessor. It had been named after Dervorguilla de Balliol who died in 1290. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
