Scope and Content Goldielea Viaduct, Kirkcudbrightshire In the 19th century, railway companies in Britain led the world in developing a new form of architecture based on engineering. The largest of their works were viaducts and bridges. This viaduct was built by John Miller, Junior, in 1859. The viaduct, built for the Castle Douglas and Dumfries Railway, has 18 round-headed arches springing from battered piers and is built from red ashlar. There are occasional refuges above the buttresses to enable workmen to step aside from passing trains. The viaduct, which spans a wide valley, is no longer in use, as the railway line was closed in 1965. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
