Scope and Content Old Library, St Mary's College, St Andrews, Fife St Mary's College was founded in 1537 by James Beaton, Archbishop of St Andrews. Since its initial completion in 1544 (with the help of French masons employed on king's palace at Falkland), the college has been expanded and modernised. The Old Library (centre) was built in 1612-18 and reconstructed by John Gairdner in 1764-7. The two nearest bays were added in 1829-30 by Robert Reid who carefully copied Gairdner's design, even having replicas made of the medieval corbels. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
