Scope and Content Detail of cruck-framed roof in east block of Briar Cottage, Lochearnhead Briar Cottage is situated on the main road through the village of Lochearnhead. It is actually formed from a pair of cottages, possibly built in the early 19th century. Both cottages are thatch-roofed with a corrugated iron covering. The east cottage, shown here, is cruck-framed. This is a form of traditional timber-framing which uses pairs of curved timber 'blades' or 'crucks' as supports, resting on stone footings. This view shows the interior of the cottage, where the two cruck blades meet at the ridge of the roof. Just below the apex, there is a collar, which adds strength to the structure.
