Scope and Content Escape tunnel, Military Headquarters, Pitreavie, Dunfermline, Fife The date of construction of the military headquarters is probably 1937-8. It was remodelled and enlarged c.1963. Between 1963-96, it was the second most important naval headquarters in Britain after the main fleet headquarters at Northwood, Middlesex. The headquarters were under the tennis courts at Pitreavie Castle and were entirely underground apart from the main entrance and exits from the escape tunnels. This is a view of one of the three escape tunnels. These escape tunnels were also used as goods entrances, hence the ramps. The headquarters could hold up to 200 staff and was a joint Royal Navy and Royal Air Force headquarters. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
