Scope and Content Carved stone effigy, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This rectangular slab bears the figure of an abbot or bishop within a canopied niche. The figure has a high-pointed mitre and wears Eucharistic robes. His left hand holds a crozier and his right is raised in blessing. There may have been an inscription below the figure, but it has been worn away. The slab was recorded as being in Reilig Odhrain, but is now in the Abbey Museum (No 96). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
