Scope and Content Grave-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This rectangular graveslab was formerly in Reilig Odhrain. On it are carved four panels, each of which bears a foliated cross. The panels are separated by further rows of foliage ornament. They are surrounded by an enclosed inscription and rosettes. The Latin inscription reads 'Here lie four priors of Iona from one clan, namely John, Hugo, Patrick, late Bachelor of Decreets, and another Hugo who died in the year of Our Lord 15--'. The slab is now in the Abbey Museum (No 104). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
