Scope and Content Grave-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This graveslab tapers slightly towards its base. It has a border on it comprising two roll-mouldings with a row of nail-head ornament between them. Most of the panel is filled with intertwined plant-scrolls. Above is a ship and four animals. The slab has the inscription + H(IC) IACET COLM M(A)C RHUAR/IU M(EI)CLEOID (Here lies Colum, son of Ruairi MacLeod). The carving style belongs to what is known as the Iona school. The slab is now in the Abbey Museum (No 103). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
