Scope and Content Grave-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This graveslab was formerly in the Nunnery. It tapers towards its base, and the carved decoration is set within a double roll-moulding. Most of the panel is filled with intertwined plant-scrolls, but above is a single ring-knot and some plaitwork. The carving style belongs to what is known as the Iona school. The slab is now in the Abbey Museum (No 74). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
