Scope and Content Michael Chapel, Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This drawing shows the profile-moulding of the base of the chapel's north doorway. It is very simply moulded, with a single roll, quirk (the v-shaped groove) and a chamfer. Part of the base was removed during restoration to enlarge the entrance. The 'Michael Chapel' is a free-standing chapel to the east of the east range. It was given the name after 1959, but there are records of chapel dedicated to St Michael in the 16th century. It was partly restored in 1875 and fully in 1959. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
