Scope and Content Tay Works, Lochee Road, Dundee Within Britain, the spinning and weaving of jute took place almost entirely in Dundee. Until recently, jute was second only to cotton in the world's production of textile fibres. It was important for use in packaging, linoleum and upholstery. At 198m, the Tay Works is possibly the longest textile mill in Britain. The first part of the mill was built in 1834-6. Other buildings were added at later dates, incorporating the original buildings. Some of the power-looms were driven by steam. The first iron-framed mill (1834-6) was fireproof. Thereafter, almost all the multi-storeyed mills in Dundee were fireproof. The strong construction of the buildings was also useful because the machines needed for processing jute were very heavy.
