Scope and Content North transept at Iona Abbey, Argyll and Bute The Benedictine abbey at Iona was built around AD 1200 on the site of St Columba's earlier monastery. It was altered and partly rebuilt in the 13th century and again in the 15th century. It became derelict after the Reformation of 1560. This drawing shows how the capitals in the entrances of the two chapels in the E wall may have looked. The decoration was symmetrical about the corner of the S and W faces. It consisted of a foliage design, carved in relief. The N transept is one of the oldest parts of the church still standing. Along with short sections of the N wall of the nave and choir, it belongs to the original Benedictine abbey from around 1200 AD. It was restored between 1902 and 1904.
