Scope and Content Letter from J Joass to J Anderson, 30 September 1895, describing excavations at Nybster Broch, Caithness and illustrating painted pebbles found at various sites Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) excavated over 30 archaeological sites in Caithness between 1890 and 1906. This is a particularly fine example of an illustrated letter, and shows a selection of painted pebbles found in his excavations. Barry recognised that he did not have detailed archaeological knowledge and relied on help and advice from others, including the Reverend J Joass, an antiquarian from Golspie and the author of this letter. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle, Caithness in 1890.
