Scope and Content West Kirk, Culross, Fife The West Kirk was built during the Middle Ages and abandoned in the 17th century, perhaps at the time when the burgh went into economic decline. The surrounding graveyard, however, remained in use and contains 17th- and 18th-century headstones. The northern crow-stepped gable of the 17th-century burial-aisle (right) incorporates fragments of earlier monuments, including a Bruce Coat of Arms. The church door (left) was inserted in the 17th century. The small window to its left is medieval. Culross declined sharply during the 18th-century as its iron scone-girdle industry, damaged by loss of monopoly in 1727, was killed off by competition from Carron Ironworks.
