Scope and Content Broch at Skitten, Caithness, during the course of excavation by Sir Francis Tress Barry in 1903-4 This is one of some 30 archaeological sites excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry (1825-1907) in Caithness between 1890 and 1906. Under a grass-covered mound at Skitten, Barry discovered the remains of a broch. Barry only excavated the western half of the broch, revealing the broch entrance and upright slabs in the interior dividing the centre into compartments. Further excavations were carried out in 1940, prior to the construction of an aerodrome. Sir Francis Tress Barry was MP for Windsor, Berkshire between 1890 and 1906. He had enjoyed a distinguished diplomatic and business career, and began to take an active interest in archaeology after his purchase of Keiss Castle, Caithness in 1890.
