Scope and Content Main Staircase, No 3 Rothesay Terrace, Edinburgh This view of the main staircase of No 3 Rothesay Terrace, Edinburgh, was taken c.1890 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The house, built in 1876, was reconstructed in 1883 by the architect, Sydney Mitchell. This elaborate staircase, entered through an intricately carved walnut arcade, has marble steps and wrought-brass balusters. Its two upper newel posts (centre), also in walnut, are topped by a splendid pair of carved griffins. Rothesay Terrace was one of the last terraces to be built within the exclusive 19th-century housing development known as Edinburgh's Western New Town. No 3 was re-designed for John Ritchie Findlay, the philanthropist and owner of 'The Scotsman' newspaper. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
