Scope and Content Life Drawing Studio, Edinburgh College of Art, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh This photograph of one of the studios of the Edinburgh College of Art was taken in 1909 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The college was designed in 1906-9 by John More Dick Peddie and completed in 1912. This studio, designed for life drawing, is flooded by light from large north-facing windows. The electric light system, probably used for evening classes, runs on a series of pulleys that allow the bulbs to be positioned directly above each workstation. The design of the college allowed for separate rooms for life drawing classes for men and women, as well as heated dressing apartments for models. The students' cloakrooms were on the ground floor of the building, along with the kitchens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
