Scope and Content Plan of foundation at Conon Bridge, Maryburgh, Ross and Cromarty Thomas Telford, born in Dumfriesshire, trained as a stone-mason but studied architecture in his spare time. In 1787, aged 30, he went to Shrewsbury and under the patronage of William Pulteney, the richest commoner in England, his career flourished. By this date, bridge-builders were using steam power to construct the foundations. Pumping machines were used to remove the water from enclosures known as 'cofferdams'. These temporary dams enabled the foundations to be constructed on the dry river bed. As an apprentice mason and later as a journeyman, Telford had acquired extensive and valuable practical experience working in the Langholm area. He worked on bridges, including the Langholm Bridge, on which his mason's mark can still be seen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
