Scope and Content Valley of the Water of Leith at Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith, has more of the character of a small town than a suburb, although the pre-1813 village of riverside cottages, mills and villas was quite transformed by later development. A woodland walk, with railings on each side, follows the south bank of the Water of Leith east to Stockbridge, passing St George's Well and the temple-like St Bernard's Well below the enormous arched retaining walls of Ainslie Place and Moray Place. St George's Well, an odd little windowless structure, and St Bernard's Well, in the style of a Roman temple, were both built over a medicinal spring discovered in 1760 whose 'sulphurous waters' seemed to have powerful healing properties.
