Scope and Content Pre-1908 view of Spring Garden Iron Works, Aberdeen Spring Garden Iron Works was founded in 1789 by William McKinnon and Co. It is one of the factories that flourished and continued to provide employment after the Aberdeen textile industry collapsed during the economic crisis of the 1840s and 1850s. This picture, which comes from an early catalogue, shows the works before new offices were built around 1908. An economic crisis during the 1840s and 1850s slowed Aberdeen's population growth and caused the collapse of the local textile industry. It was replaced by newer industries in 1860s, and once again the population grew rapidly. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
