Scope and Content St Bernard's Well and St George's Well on the banks of the Water of Leith, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Stockbridge, on the banks of the Water of Leith, has more of the character of a small town than a suburb, although the pre-1813 village of riverside cottages, mills and villas was quite transformed by later development. This view of the Water of Leith, looking east towards Stockbridge, shows St Bernard's Well, a circular Roman-style temple built in 1788, and the smaller St George's Well, built in 1810 a few hundred metres upstream, on the south bank of the river. Both St Bernard's Well and St George's Well were built to celebrate the presence of a mineral spring, declared in 1760 'to be equal in quality to any of the most famous in Britain', and regarded at the time as having powerful healing properties.
