Scope and Content North of Scotland Bank, King Street and Castlegate, Aberdeen The North of Scotland Bank was built in 1839-42. It was one of the many neoclassical works of Archibald Simpson, a merchant's son who practised as an architect after returning from a tour of Italy in 1813-14. The terracotta statue over the entrance is by James Giles, a friend of the architect. It represents Demeter, the Ancient Greek earth goddess, and celebrates the local agricultural improvements. From 1800-1840, a generation of prestigious young architects led by John Smith and Archibald Simpson remodelled Aberdeen in Grecian neoclassical style and improved the infrastructure to meet the needs of the city's expanding industries.
