Detail of extinguisher and supporting strut

Description Detail of extinguisher and supporting strut

Catalogue Number SC 367260

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of ED 4805/3

Scope and Content Torch extinguisher at No 6, north side of Charlotte Square, Edinburgh No 6, built in 1798, is the centre of the north terrace of the square. In partial payment of estate duty, it became the property of the National Trust for Scotland in 1966, and established as the official residence of the Secretary of State for Scotland. This link or torch extinguisher, shaped like an upturned horn, is set into a lamp standard at railing height. Link boys guided people through the dark streets before street lighting came into use, and extinguished their torches in 'snuffers' provided on railings for this purpose. Other examples in the New Town include extinguishers shaped like dragon's heads. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
