Scope and Content Dormer windows of 1597 block of Culross Palace, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. The oldest block was built in 1597 before George Bruce made his fortune. The pediment above the central dormer window bears his initials and coat-or-arms, as well as the date 1590. George Bruce of Culross (later of Carnock) who built Culross Palace, was a merchant, entrepreneur and industrialist who made his fortune developing the local coal and salt industry. He was knighted by James VI and died in 1625. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
