Scope and Content Rear of Culross Palace looking towards the Forth, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. The palace overlooks the Firth of Forth, the source of much of its owner's wealth. It was very much a rich merchant's house, only gaining the title 'palace' due to a mis-reading of old documents in the 1850s. George Bruce of Culross (later of Carnock) who built Culross Palace, was a merchant, entrepreneur and industrialist who made his fortune developing the local coal and salt industry. He was knighted by James VI and died in 1625. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
