Scope and Content North block of Culross Palace, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. The initials S G B above one of the dormer windows stand for Sir George Bruce who built this block the year after he was knighted. Like the rest of the palace, its roof is covered with pantiles, commonly brought over as ballast from the Netherlands. George Bruce of Culross (later of Carnock) who built Culross Palace, was a merchant, entrepreneur and industrialist who made his fortune developing the local coal and salt industry. He was knighted by James VI and died in 1625. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
