Scope and Content Plan of enclosure of early monastery and later abbey, Iona, Argyll and Bute The monastery at Iona founded by Columba in the 6th century became one of the greatest monasteries of the Irish church, controlling daughter houses in Ireland, Argyll (Dál Riata), Pictland, and, for a time in the 7th century, in Northumbria. This plan shows the original enclosure of the monastery at Iona. It was rectangular in shape and surrounded by an earthwork vallum on three sides. On the east side, rather than having been open to the sea, it is likely there was a timber stockade. The original monastery buildings would have been made of timber and the original church may have been on the site of the present abbey church. Traces of earlier foundations were found under the nave during restoration work in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
