Scope and Content Fort known as Dun Cul Bhuirg, Iona, Argyll and Bute Dun Cul Bhuirg stands on a precipitous rocky outcrop on the W coast of Iona, overlooking the N end of Camas Cuil t-Saimh. The fort was excavated during the 1950s and 60s, and produced a number of datable finds including pottery. This is a plan of the summit, showing areas which were excavated. Site 1 was the position of a hearth and possible lean-to structure. Site 2 was part of the defensive wall. A stone-walled house was found at site 3. Site 4 may have been another structure. As well as pottery, several glass beads were also recovered from the site, as was an amount of midden material. All the finds support the dates suggested by the pottery. The site is one of the most southerly to produce decorated Hebridean wares. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
